Next version next week (hopefully) or a bit later.

      >end_request: I/O error, dev sdh, sector 1144
      >md/raid:md0: Disk failure on sdh, disabling device.
      >md/raid:md0: Operation continuing on 16 devices.

I sure hope third drive doesn't decide to die on me while the rebuild is running.
And that's why you shouldn't procrastinate replacing disks even with raid6.

      rwx09 November, 2013 20:38

The drive I thought I'd use as a replacement did not pass full surface check, so I had to order new ones.
I'd have to rebuild to one drive, take it out, rebuild to a second one, take it out, compare their contents, as there are silent bus errors which could cause rebuild process to write erroneous data to the new drives, and think what to do next if there are mismatches anywhere other than in array headers.
I'm considering skipping this release and waiting for Feb 2014, but havent decided yet. Will post update next weekend.

  14. There's a problem with one of the tta files. 弾奏結界 幻葬旋律曲 Necromanza (by dBu Music) skips on 無何有の郷 ~ Snowed Mountain. It skips around 0:09 seconds and starts playing again after about two seconds. This shouldn't be happening. Is it possible that this problem be fixed somehow? If that is ok.

    4. Well I am using foobar, and I did redownload the file but it still skips at 0:09. (Sorry for replying so late)

    6. Don't have any problem either, try downloading it again from another torrent?

      Delete
    7. Have you guys tried re-downloading that particular album from that link? Maybe the current one you have isn't corrupt, but the one in the download link seems to definitely be corrupt. Maybe it got corrupt at some point while uploading in the past. I downloaded that same album about 5 times and the same thing happens over and over again. Both in Foobar and in Audacity. I have no problem with any other album, why just this one? If it turns out the problem is actually just me for some reason, then what other torrent is there where I can download this particular album?

      Delete
    8. Actually, never mind, I'm hoping it just my audio player. Cause I'm noticing some weird skips on some other songs as well. Why is this... My foobar is on it's latest version, maybe it's just foobar? Maybe it's just audacity? What audio player do you guys use?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Does anyone know how to tag one specific song without splitting the album? foobar2000 reads .cue files instead of one single album files, maybe that's why I cannot modify the tags but I'm not sure...
Btw rwx thx for your wonderful work ^^

    ReplyDelete
  28. That was a fast answer, thx ! :p
I clicked on utilities => edit cuesheet but I have this message http://puu.sh/7eZSr.jpg
This is the cuesheet opened : http://puu.sh/7f010.jpg
In fact, I'd like to add a "rating" tag like i did here for example : http://puu.sh/7f06K.jpg
I managed doing it by writing APL link files based on the cuesheet http://puu.sh/7f0ie.jpg => http://puu.sh/7f0oR.jpg
And once switched the cuesheet by the APL file in foobar's playlist I can tag them.
But I'd like to do it directly because I'm too lazy xD

    2. Only way it would work is if you rip it/split it, or use another player that would remember the ISO-9660/Red Book tagging correctly. And far as my brain goes, only one that would do that is iTunes.

Personally I use iTunes to rip all my crap, and honestly, I think older version has minimode that is lot more tidier looking then Foobar. Well, imo, Foobar looks just ugly downright, and doesn't do all tagging I use. (I actually do use composer / comment / grouping / rating field)

      Delete
    3. This is because, natively speaking, Wave format/ISO-9660/Red Book was not designed to handle some of the tagging (ID3). Certainly, you can force some tagging on it, such as title, and depends on media player. Rating, artist, title, grouping, and album name tags fine on iTunes, but there are still many issues, such as no album art embedding. This is because for iTunes' case, the iTunes Media Data would remember this info for you, but it doesn't work perfectly, since ID3 can not be written on the file itself.

So in that sense, it would be uselessness of the Foobar that's the issue.

      Delete
    4. Thx for the explanations ! I'll take a look at iTunes or keep doing APL files ^^

  33. Hey rwx, just wanna say thanks for all the selfless work you do organizing, collecting, and maintaining the TLMC. I was pretty worried when February came and went and there was no update; I had prepared myself for the worst before coming here and reading the comments, but after reading that you were still working on it, I was relieved. I really don't mind however long the wait is, and would be glad to have yearly updates.if it's easier on you. I've been following since v14, and the TLMC is about 95% of everything I listen to. It's an important part of my life (as I'm sure it is for many others). I don't know how much help you get from other people that send you albums and stuff, but major props to them as well for tracking down these gems (and knowing who to send them to).

Hope this comment gives you some encouragement. Take your time, stay healthy, and thanks for giving us all innumerable hours of wonderful listening time.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Just thought I'd post the correct way to listen to the TLMC.

You're supposed to shuffle the songs only once, so you can go through 46,000 songs without hearing any repeats. And resume playing from the last index at the next session.

If you leave the songs on random shuffle every time, on average you'll have to listen to about 400,000 songs before you'll have heard each song at least once. That's on average of 10 repeats for every song.

Shuffling only once is the best way to minimize repeats. And by the time you finish the 46,000 songs, you'll have forgotten the first songs, so you can listen forever, and each song sounds completely new.

    1. You forget taste. Few love hardcore and piano arrange at the same time. So I recommend to pick circles fit your preferences. That would be a much smaller pool.

No more deadlines, ready when I think there's enough new material. Instead of expecting and getting frustrated just add to RSS and forget about it until release.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well that's some major bullshit right there.
Now I'm just flat out incapable of listening to things from the past handful of Comikets that have gone by since getting every album that was released after the initial first week or two is near enough impossible.
I don't see what the problem is with releasing one last update now that everybody knows that the next ones are actually going to be coming out much more sparsely, but I'm sure nobody will mind that since they can just sit in threads on /jp/ downloading the albums themselves as they come out.
I also don't know what you mean by "when I think there's enough new material". You yourself said that there's near 35GBs worth of albums.
I'm not even mad that you're getting tired of updating this, because I would probably get sick of it too, but you could at least give us one last update now that we know that the updates have a chance of coming out much much slower than usual (which I'm sure everybody would be fine with providing they're told in advance).
As for the inevitable ass kissing "wow man wtf he owes you nothing" replies, just shut the fuck up. I'm well aware of that.

    "P████e & D█████s I picked up V██████e C█████e." I don't know if it's just me but I can't read what this part of the sentence says.

  57. Still waiting faithfully for the next release.

And I did some research for myself and other Linux users around these parts (do they exist?). I've tried at least twelve native music players/managers for Linux claiming some degree of cuesheet and/or tta support and found that exactly *one* of them actually handles the unmodified TLMC contents very well: cmus, an ncurses based player and library manager (though it must be compiled with cue and ffmpeg support; cmus --plugins to check and clear cache if it doesn't work when it should). And cmus just so happens to be an excellent piece of software when you put in the effort of getting familiar with its functions and workflow. An honorable mention goes to DeaDBeeF: it handles the cuesheets and tta playback, but doesn't really have a library and crashed on me more than once in a few hours of testing.

I was bugged two things in the resulting library, though: not all albums have year numbers (even though they're present in the directory names) and there are many spelling variations and inconsistencies in the artist names (even though they're nicely grouped in the directory structure). So I wrote a shell script to automatically replace these pieces of information in the cuesheets with information extracted from the directory structure. This greatly improved the usability of the TLMC library in cmus. Here's the script: http://pastebin.com/kcVQvT77

Of course just post links that contain lossless touhou music, not lossy. TTA format is preferred but not necessary.

More specifically, here is the link to where in the fourms people post their downloads to:
      http://www.doujinstyle.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=16

One thing to mind though is that there are also lossy uploads. But, considering the direct downloads and that the vast collection of music is - well, vast - why shouldn't I mention it? And if there was an lossy encode of an album someone uploaded, you could request for a lossless encode. There is a "Requests" board in the fourms (also useful for requesting albums that haven't been posted yet), or you can just ask on the same topic the lossy encode was on.

    2. I think that he's pointing at some sites with lossless albums. Besides you can a lot of the lossless in DS, but it'd be better to go look for them at baidu.

  61. Many tta rips are uploaded to the Perfect Dark p2p network. It's not that hard to set up if you have the required disk space (which shouldn't be a problem for this particular audience) and the malware risk is low to non-existent, it just takes a bit of patience to download the goods from Asia over an encrypted, distributed network. But eventually everything gets through, and music in particular is very doable. There's an English interface option and the filtering is pretty straightforward as long as you know the right keywords. In my experience terms like tta, cue, 東方, 同人, 音楽, names of circles, conventions (e.g. C85 or 例大祭), and of course specific albums can all be effective.

    1. Thanks! I remember it requires to have good internet connection tho, at least 100Mb. C/D?

      Delete
    2. Definitely false. It's just that many Japanese have 100mbit links, which is (together with the enforced 50GB cache per client) why the network can survive in the first place. The only speed requirement that I know of is that you set your upload cap to at least 100kB/s. There may or may not be a download penalty involved for proving incapable of managing that speed. Anyway, this means you're good with even 1mbit of upstream, which I suppose won't be a problem for most of us.

A few other points I forgot to mention:
      - Unlike bittorrent, where opening ports is optional and results in better performance, it is absolutely required for PD. You can set the port to anything you want but you must make sure your router forwards this ports traffic to your computer and your firewall allows incoming connections on this port. The steps are the same as for bittorrent so one of the many existing guides can be used.
      - You can grab the client from here http://perfectdark.benri-tool.net/init/install.html (after that it's self-updating)
      - On the first run the network has to be bootstrapped with a list of nodes, you can use this one http://perfectdark.benri-tool.net/node/nodes.txt (use with the 'encrypted' option for adding nodes in PD)
      - You have to be a bit patient at first as PD probes the network and builds up a cache; just keep it running for a day or so. Even after that, searches will always be gradual, meaning part of the results may appear immediately but they are often supplemented by harder-to-find results in the course of time (up to a couple of days in rare cases). So leave your dead searches around for some time, there's always a chance something will pop up later. And make sure you're not actually doing a sub-search when you meant to make a new search, the PD interface isn't very clear on this.

Also, what's the obsession with external hard drives? They are slow, the USB-SATA chips are often flakey and glitch once a week at best and so on. The internal ones cost less, don't take extra space on the table and just work until they die.

    1. Ow, I forgot that many Touhou albums are already in TTA and one single track files in Japan, so the reason may be to keep only one kind of format. But that doesn't answer to the question, why not FLAC (it offers a better compression, if I'm not wrong...).

    4. One of the main reasons I chose TTA was that it offers unique representation. TTA compressor has a single set compression "level", is deterministic and as a container of sorts does not have embedded metadata, which is a huge plus. This means that two identical PCM waveforms will be compressed into two identical .tta files.
Regarding compression level it is 2 or 3 times slower to decode than FLAC, but it's still hundreds of times realtime speed for modern CPUs. It compresses just a tiny bit better than FLAC, but the difference is of the order of 0.5-1%, which is for all reasonable applications a "don't care" level and makes other features (see above) a priority.
I also don't like split tracks because that's pretty much the same mixing of data (AudoCD contents) and metadata (track boundaries and names). Keeping a separate cue sheet is a simple, clean and logical decoupling.

tl;dr - enable third-party cookies (make them expire on browser close if you're paranoid like me).

    2. The same goes for many other albums as well, which is why I wrote this bash script to deal with it by inserting the year numbers from the directory names into the cuesheets: http://pastebin.com/kcVQvT77 (it does the same for artist names, you can comment that part out if you want)
If you don't have a Linux/Unix environment available it should work with Cygwin on Windows. I recall the existence of a similar script in some kind of Windows-friendly macro language but I can't seem to find the comment again (it was either here or on nyaa).
If there's demand for it I'll consider creating packages with prepatched sheets.

    3. Deja vu intensifies, I also recall some other script to put data from file names into cuesheets.
Btw, the logic in this script seems somewhat strange to me: a CD may have various performers (like an IOSYS album) and they all will be replaced with the circle name. Proper full-blown automagical rename would be hard and annoying to code, though.

      Delete
    4. >enable third-party cookies
      I already have them enabled
      >Proper full-blown automagical rename would be hard and annoying to code
So I guess we can just report all errors/blanks in tags to you and wait for next release

      Delete
    5. I was mainly concerned with reducing clutter in the long, long list of artists and the artist grouping from the directory structure does a pretty good job at that. But I can imagine not everyone liking this behavior.

Found another script by the way (though not the one I was talking about): https://bucko909.livejournal.com/13248.html
Uses an external source rather than directory names. May yield better results, but probably a bit harder to use and more likely to break or screw something up at some point.

      Delete
    6. Another somewhat major issue is that some albums aren't properly tagged by Album Artist, i.e. circle name. Sometimes the field is just blank, which makes searching by circle difficult, and sometimes it's filled with the Artist field, which screws everything up if Artist had the performer name. ZYTOKINE/CYTOKINE in the current pack has this problem, for example.

Thanks for your work, by the way. Is there any menial labor that could be partitioned out to make things easier?

    7. >Is there any menial labor that could be partitioned out to make things easier?
      Thanks for the offer.
I don't think there is anything metadata-related that everyone wants to get done and everyone agrees on how it should be done. In short, if you see something that you think could be done better then you do it the way you think is right and I will link to your results.

Put your torrent directory closer to the root of the drive (in terms of path length). I have it in "X:\Music\Touhou Lossless Music Collection\" (mounted with CIFS) and I didn't notice any problems so far. You can rename the top-level directory and retarget the torrent (in most popular clients) if you need to put it somewhere deep (for example "C:\Something and something\another thing\deep down below\my music\TLMC").

There are two general approach patterns towards making something work or fixing something that doesn't work as desired. One is finding the smallest and easiest change that leads to system working right now and doing it. Another is agreeing on a standard or a logical structure that guarantees that system would always work and making sure all parts of the system follow the standard (and replacing those which don't). Second approach leads to systems that generally work (modulo human errors in theoretical design and physical implementation). First approach leads to a horrible mess of spaghetti kludges held together by duct tape and bent staples. Furthermore, I can't even begin to describe how wrong on every level feels a suggestion to patch something that follows the standard in order to fix a problem caused by something that doesn't. By now you could probably guess which school of thought I subscribe to, so... no renames ;)

      >Windows limits the path to 1024 characters.
These are not the droids you are looking for. NTFS has a file name length limit of 255 characters (ext2/3/4, XFS, JFS, UFS, ZFS all have it at 255 bytes) and some rather large path length limit.

The link you provided refers to length limit of environment variables. One of the most prominent enivornmental variables actually called "PATH", which confused you.

Either way, file system limits might be different than the ones of operating systems. In Windows, situation is as follows:
      http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#maxpath

      > In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which is defined as 260 characters.
      > The Windows API has many functions that also have Unicode versions to permit an extended-length path for a maximum total path length of 32,767 characters.
      > To specify an extended-length path, use the "\\?\" prefix. For example, "\\?\D:\very long path".
      > Because you cannot use the "\\?\" prefix with a relative path, relative paths are always limited to a total of MAX_PATH characters.

Basically, programmer has to know about these extended-length paths, and always convert paths to them, which might be pain in the ass, especially if he's writing portable application. Relative paths not being supported is not very convenient, either.

  74. For some reason v17 have some albums missing (when compared to v13). For example:

    [Aether]/2005.08.14 [AETR-0004] Essence~Music of Mana~ [C68]/Audio CD.tta

This file is definitely missing in torrent, but v17 cuesheet still list them in [Aether] directory (which is also missing).

There are 51 filepaths total, that are present in v13 and are missing v17:

    http://pastebin.com/m6bqQ2uY

perhaps most of them have been renamed/combined, but some of them (i.e. Music of Mana) are simply missing.

      2. Pass the wav file through the TTA encoder
      3. Edit cue to point it to the new TTA file (and save it in UTF-8 format)
      4. ...
      5. Profit!

    2. Hi and thanks for the offer. When in doubt, err on the side of uploading if it is not a bother for you.
*Format* conversion is not a problem for me. The main issue would be separate files. I do not merge split files back because who knows what settings were used in ripping them, so I would not be guaranteed to get a perfect copy of the original album (although, to be fair, even among those who rip to one file per CD there are ones who forget the drive offset or rip in burst mode).

The other anon wrote how to do tta+cue. You can probably even set up EAC so that is uses tta encoder and enjoy one button ripping. Remember to read the FAQs on how to do proper secure extraction.

Except it would be very uncool if the date came and there were still no release. Research shows that people are about 3x more unhappy about losing a thing they have than happy about gaining the same thing they don't have, so if we generalize this to fulfilled/broken promises I'd have to be more than 75% percent sure for it to be a net positive decision. Which I am not, so there.
